Radio Lollipop Makes West Coast Debut at Children's Hospital of Orange County

Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) today unveiled the West Coast's first Radio Lollipop, a hospital-based radio station that provides a stimulating mix of music and interactive games for patients. Radio Lollipop at CHOC's studio is housed in the hospital's main lobby and run by a team of volunteers who involve patients in recreational activities linked to radio programs that are child focused. Twice weekly, on "Terrific Tuesdays" and "Thrilling Thursdays," from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., volunteer deejays will play "Top 40" hits and children's favorites, take call-in requests, and put patients "on air" from the bedside or in the studio.

102.7 KIIS FM and Ryan Seacrest, top-rated broadcast personality from KIIS FM, "American Top 40," "American Idol," "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve," and E! Networks, christened Radio Lollipop at CHOC by broadcasting Seacrest's top-rated morning show from inside the studio. (Seacrest and KIIS FM have assisted in raising awareness and funds for Radio Lollipop at CHOC. KIIS FM engineers and programming staff have been consulting on the project to help ensure it features state-of-the-art broadcast equipment. KIIS FM staff will continue to support the program by providing prizes and special guest appearances.)

Following the KIIS FM broadcast, Seacrest led patients on the countdown to the inaugural broadcast of Radio Lollipop at CHOC, which included special guests, Walt Disney Records' Recording Artists The Cheetah Girls (Adrienne Bailon, Sabrina Bryan and Kiely Williams). The CHOC broadcast, with an "Under the Sea" theme, was led by Bruce (McMooses) McCoy & Frankie (Crank it with Frank) also featured trivia games and crafts.

Elana Ten Huisen, manager of CHOC's Child Life Department, responsible for overseeing Radio Lollipop at CHOC, says of the opening, "It's truly a privilege to have been selected as the first Radio Lollipop site on the West Coast and only the third in the nation. We are so excited to be able to provide our patients and their families with this innovative program, helping us enhance the healing power of play here at CHOC."
